Three days after the birth of the laser in 1960 scientists predicted that it could be used to initiate fusion power production. 50 years later, lasers are due to demonstrate net fusion energy production on the recently constructed $4B National Ignition Facility. Fusion offers abundant, safe, secure, carbon-free energy at a level that can meet the demands of our civilisation for the truly long term. Within Europe, scientists from across 10 nations led by the UK are working on the HiPER project - to build from this scientific proof-of-principle to demonstrate the path to bulk energy production, and open out a wealth of new scientific discovery.

The sound is pretty awful, but this is neat stuff.
